Spotlight Interview with Julia Baker, Planning Supervisor

Julia Baker’s rapid journey from a Data Entry Specialist to Planning Supervisor is a testament to ambition and perseverance. In this Spotlight Interview, she shares how embracing challenges, seizing every learning opportunity, and relying on a supportive team paved the way for her swift career advancement in the dynamic utility industry.

Can you share your journey from a Data Entry Specialist to becoming a Planner Supervisor in just two years?

I started as a DES in an effort to get back into an office after a few years in hospitality. It was a big switch, and although I was prepared to face challenges, I looked at the big picture and saw that, what would momentarily be a step back, would be an opportunity to propel me forward in the long run.
As a DES, I supported a team of Planners. I communicated to the team that I wanted to go above and beyond in my role, if they were willing to teach me the new skills required. I was lucky to work with a team that supported my ambition to grow. I am indebted to those who took the time to explain utilities to an industry outsider.
My hard work and vocalization of wanting to progress paid off when a Planner role opened. I was hired and attended Planner class which helped me to dive deeper into utilities and learn complex industry skills.
While in class, an opportunity for the Planning Supervisor role arose. With the combination of newfound utility knowledge, past experience and education, and my hunger to grow, I was fortunate enough to land the role.
I am grateful to be here and so providential to be taking in more knowledge and gaining experience with each day.

What were the biggest challenges you faced transitioning into the utility industry without prior experience, and how did you overcome them?

The utility industry is tough, because it is something that no one thinks about on a daily basis, or at least, not me. I entered a new world, with a new language and a LOT of acronyms.
It took the patience and grace of my teammates, research, and a lot of time in the field looking at real examples for me to gain a comprehension of the industry. One thing about utilities is, no matter how long you have been here, you still learn something new each day. You must stay humble and absorb as much information as you can.

How did Nexiya’s culture and opportunities help you build the skills needed to excel in your role?

I love working here because there is a lot of support! Everyone is friendly, responsive, and checks in. I appreciate that they acknowledged my goals and used their positive relationship with me to facilitate growth in my career.

What personal traits or skills do you think were most important in achieving such rapid career growth?

Ambition, consistency, and communication.

What advice would you give to someone looking to grow into a leadership role, especially if they’re entering a new industry?

Learn as much as you can! Even if something is not a ‘part of your job description,’ every task you are handed is an opportunity. Don’t be afraid to let your management and peers know that you want more work. Even simple tasks showcase skills such as organization, time management, and critical thinking. Each time you take an extra step; it helps facilitate positive relationships with team members and build industry comprehension.
